Horror T.V. to Stream - Editorial

Horror television has never been better.

True.

Horror television has never been worse.

Also True.

The world of streaming is a swirling magical cesspool. There’s so many options and no way to tell what’s good and what’s not. Most streaming services have removed the ability to dislike or give feedback on movies or series’ outside of showing the Rotten Tomatoes score, which is a dubious site to trust no matter who you are.

With this in mind, I thought I’d present my five favorite streaming horror themed shows that you may have missed. Are these the only good options?

No.

Are these the only shows I like?

No.

I love a lot of mainstream shows. I loved Stranger Things up to the end of season 3 and I loved Supernatural up until the end of season 5. Both shows should have ended at that point.

Fight me.

I also love Creepshow, but it’s a massive hit and doesn’t need a shout out. It is widely regarded as a cornerstone of modern horror TV.

These 5 shows, to me, are the top of the pops. These are the shows I keep coming back to for my horror fix.

Imagine Buffy the Vampire Slayer but with a massive budget, good special effects, solid acting, and good writing. Oh and no Joss Whedon. It’s a win, win.

This show has a charismatic lead in Alba Baptista and a cast of rockstar character actors from international television and film like Joaquim de Almeida and Sylvia De Fanti. It’s a lot of beautiful people and shot around the world on location with Imax level cinematography.

It was created and written by Simon Barry who has worked on some of my favorite shows such as Continuum, Bad Blood, and Van Helsing.

You’ve got three dimensional characters, beautiful locations, great special effects and monster designs, and an intriguing story surrounding the dark side of Catholic dogma.

Check it out exclusively streaming on Netflix.

Imagine Constantine, but set in the underworld of Mexico City.

No that’s not right.

This show is much more a Mexican Hellblazer.

This is a gritty, darkly comic view into the supernatural underworld of Latin America. This is a place where the stakes are high and nothing is fair. You’ve got underground demon-host fight clubs, Mexican-Korean soul brokers, A cartel run by the anti-christ, and hints of angels in a time when they’ve been long thought extinct.

It’s a wild, unpredictable ride that you need to see to believe.
Check it out streaming exclusively on Netflix.

Have you ever watched The Exorcist and thought, I wish the priests had machine guns?

Then this is the show for you.

Created by the mad-genius behind The Day of the Beast, The Last Circus, and Witching and Bitching. This show is Alex de la Iglesia’s magnum opus. It blends the Cthulhu mythos with Catholic mythology in an addictively mind-warping fashion. Anything can and will happen when the devil comes for Padre Vergara.

The acting is incredible lead by Eduard Fernandez, playing against type as the disgraced exorcist and backed up by the impassioned performance of Megan Montaner and and genre legend Macarena Gomez in supporting roles.

The monster design is at Silent Hill / Evil Within levels with a special effects budget beyond anything seen on network television. The creatures are disgusting in the most fleshy, cosmic horror way.

Check this out on HBO MAX, exclusively.

Do you like Creepy Pastas?

Do you like amazing writing, directing, and acting?

Do you like shows that push the limits of the genre?

Then Channel Zero is for you.

This is my favorite show of ALL TIME.

Each season is it’s own closed-ended story arc.

Are all the season equal?

No, of course not—but… not everyone has the same likes and dislikes as the person next to them. While I didn’t like season 2 all the much, I’ve met people who have season 2 rated as their top season of the series. It has something for everyone.

I highly recommend season 3: Butcher Block and season 1: Candle Cove as the pinnacles of the series. Of course, they are also based on 2 of my favorite Creepy Pasta stories, Search and Rescue Woods and Candle Cove.

Check this out on Shudder.

Woah, why are you mad? I know The Evil Dead is a huge money making franchise with moves in production. I know Ash is a cultural icon for horror fans.

But I still meet people who have never seen Ash vs. the Evil Dead.

Why?

Because very few people ever have subscribed to STARZ.

Straight up, I don’t know anyone who pays for STARZ. I know a lot of people who stack up free trails when there’s a show they like that’s exclusive to the service—but I don’t know anyone who actually pays for a full-time subscription. It amazes me that the service keeps going especially with subscriber declines on cable.

Ash vs. The Evil Dead is the best Evil Dead product ever produced. It’s got the best Bruce Campbell performance of his career. It’s got the best sidekicks in horror in the indomitable Dana Delorenzo as Kelly and the fantastic Ray Santiago as the heart of the show, aka Pablo. It’s got a great villain in Lucy Lawless and all star character actor performances from the likes of Ted Raimi, Lee Majors, and Michelle Hurd.

It’s got awesome special effects, disgusting character designs, and a fun—gripping story that mixes the Evil Dead’s patented humor with true heartfelt character development.

If you love Evil Dead and Army of Darkness this is a must watch.

Currently it’s streaming on STARZ and Netflix.

This is the scariest show on television—period.

When watched in the original French with subtitles, there isn’t another show that has creeped me out and twisted my stomach into knots as much as Marianne.

This is the best Stephen King story not written by Stephen King.

It’s a mix of the greatest hits of horror with elements reminiscent of The Witch, The Wicker Man, The Exorcist, The Omen, The Dark Half, and The Shining.

It features one of the all-time greatest horror performances put to screen in the unhinged portrayal of Madame Daugeron by Mireille Herbstmeyer.

The only people I’ve spoken with who weren’t blown away by this show were those who watched it dubbed in English. The dubbing in this show and most Netflix shows is terrible and must be avoided, but especially with this one. The actors in this show put in some of the greatest horror performances of all time, but you need to hear their French inflection to truly experience the terror.

I don’t want to say much else other than this is one of the best single season shows every written.

Check this out exclusively on Netflix.
