Slotherhouse (2023) - Movie Review
Have you ever wondered what Child’s Play would have been like if Chucky had been replaced with a sloth?
Neither have I, but by god it works.
Let’s discuss.
Slotherhouse is a 2023 horror comedy brought to us by director Matthew Goodhue and writers Bradley Fowler and Cady Lanigan.
Yeah, I haven’t heard of either of them either, but they all sure put together a fun movie.
The film focuses on Emily, a sweet, unassuming sorority girl headed into her senior year of college. She’s always dreamed of running for Sorority president, but has never had the self confidence to even try running against the incumbent mean girl, Briana. But when a chance encounter with an animal poacher leads to her obtaining an adorable sloth, she finds the inner strength to overcome her fears and challenge the neurotic baddy, and bring honor and fun back to the sorority. Unfortunately, the sloth has other plans. The bodies pile up as the girls compete for votes and it all comes to a head in one brutal lock-in. Will Emily win the presidency and save the house, or will she just be another victim lining the walls of the Slotherhouse?
It’s ridiculous.
It’s hilarious.
and I loved it.
This is the perfect movie to watch with friends. There’s rarely a dull moment, and even the most annoying character, Zenny, is likable.
The special effects are terrible in the best possible way, both practical and CGI. The CGI is straight out of iMovie, and the practical effects were done on a shoestring, but they both fit perfectly.
Watching this film brought to mind the great works of the Canadian low-budget masters, Astron 6.
The biggest strength of the film is its’ ownership of what it is. It’s a tongue in cheek, tromaesque salute to slasher history.
The acting is solid, the writing is brilliant in places, and the action sequences had me in stitches.
I never thought I’d see a sloth driving a mustang to commit a murder on social media in an hospital, but I did and it was incredible.
If you like Sloths, Mean Girls, and ultra violence—this horror comedy is for you.
